About Deep River Friends Meeting

Deep River Friends Meeting, established in 1754, is a Quaker church in High Point, N.C. We gather for worship on Sundays at 11 a.m. In a world of greed, endless hurry and violence, we believe there is a better way of life. This is made possible by Jesus Christ who shows us the infinite love and mercy of God, and who accompanies us day-by-day, helping us find goodness among the difficult choices that constantly confront us.

You are invited to explore this kind of life among “Friends.” Friends have no creeds – no official words can substitute for a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Scroll to the bottom of this page for FAQs.

What to Expect

Can anyone visit a Quaker Meeting?

Yes, we welcome everyone.  Many members of the Deep River community arrived first as a visitor.  In other words, they were not reared in the Friends’ tradition, but found their way to Quakerism as adults.  You will be very welcomed.

Are you Friends, or are you Quakers?

We are both and they can be used interchangeably.  Our official name is “The Society of Friends”, but we are also known as Quakers.”

Where do I park?

We have two parking lots, one in the front and one in the back.  The handicap parking is found in the back parking lot.  To enter the meeting house from the handicap parking you will use the covered walkway into an inside corridor, then exit through the double outside doors.  This leads to a ramp that enters the side of the meeting house  (which is what Friends call our church building).

What should I wear?

Wear the clothes you feel comfortable in.

What is the worship service like?

There will be some announcements; hymn singing; a children’s message; a period of “silent worship”, which for Friends is a time of spiritual communion with God.  The silent worship will last about 15 minutes, then our pastor will deliver his prepared message for the day.  The service will be over by 12:00 noon.

What about my kids?

About 20 minutes into the service there will be a children’s message at the front of the meeting house, then, if your children wish they may join Children’s Church which is led by our Christian Education Team in another part of the building.

Is there an offering?

Yes, an offering is collected.  We do not expect visitors to contribute, although gifts are always welcomed.

Will I have to introduce myself?

No, you will not be singled out.  However, our friendly congregation will want to greet you.  If you wish, we would like you to give us your contact information on a visitor’s card found in the pew in front of you.  That will give us your name and what brought you our way.

Join us at 10:00 a.m. for coffee and an informal discussion group…

We begin our Sundays at 10:00 a.m. with Sunday School for children ages 5-12 years.  You will find this in our Fellowship Hall located on the West Wendover side.  Parking in the back lot will give you an easy entry into this building.  The adult session is called “Friendly Conversations”, and it is led by our pastor, Philip Raines.  Over a good cup of coffee we gather to listen, learn and discuss a topic centered around our Christian faith and/or our Quaker testimonies and beliefs.
